Maryland Residents Eager for a Future Wal-Mart

It is possible that Prince George’s County will welcome a superstore to Oxon Hill, Md. by 2013. The Post reported earlier this month that Wal-Mart has a tentative agreement to build a new store with the developer behind the National Harbor complex.

“We have been looking at the Prince George’s County market for quite some time now. No new retail has been built in Oxon Hill or on the 210 corridor for at least 15 years,” said Peterson Companies’ Senior VP, Taylor Chess.

Despite the fact that the new Wal-Mart would be a mile from The National Harbor, Chess insists it is exclusive to Oxon Hill and will create more of a convenience for its many residents.

“Wal-Mart is specifically a local retail opportunity for the community of Oxon Hill so that the general public wont have to cross the bridge to get everyday essentials,” Chess said.

We visited the future site Tuesday, June 7th and interviewed a few Prince George’s County residents who seemed very pleased with the recent news.

“It is a great idea for Wal-Mart to come to this area. I think it would be very convenient since most of us cross the bridge to get there normally,” replied Lynard Marshall.

In addition to Wal-Mart, the Peterson Companies plan to build a pad site for a new fire station to service all of the Prince George’s County area. They also intend to build a new entry road for Oxon Hill High School by extending Felker Avenue.

“Right now Oxon Hill High School is accessed through a neighborhood. We have been working with the school board to provide a better entry for the high school right off of Oxon Hill Road,” said Chess.
