The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber (GGCC) awarded five Montgomery College students scholarships on December 8 as a part of their Annual Celebration Dinner & Awards Ceremony. Three engineering students, one business student, and one pharmacy student received scholarships totaling $25,000.

“The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce awarded five MC students, a one-year full scholarship, at the GGCC Gala & Annual Awards Ceremony held yesterday, December 8, 2011. I was one of the recipients of the prestigious award, and I've decided to begin this blog with respect and thankfulness to all the donors and sponsors. Thank you! We were given a great opportunity to meet our college president Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, Vice President Dr. Sanjay Rai, Senator Nancy King, and several other business leaders. Ms. Kathy Stevens, who is the director of annual giving at Montgomery College, gave us a very warm welcome, and accompanied us throughout the program. Another great part of the meeting was that I got a chance to make friends with other award winners: Syed, Alfredo, Bubacarr, and Rich -- and we have started adding each other on facebook :) I also had a great interaction with Mr. James G. Muir, Assistant VP of the Hughes Network Systems, who had worked hard to raise $25,000 for Montgomery College students,” said Montgomery College student and scholarship recipient Shaswat Koirola in his Montgomery College Student Bloggers Blog.

The GGCC believes that an educated workforce helps everyone’s bottom line; and the donations from Chamber businesses and partners will help students at Montgomery College explore their “endless possibilities”.

“This gift means more to me than you can imagine. Like many others lately, I lost my job due to the sagging economy.  While I know attending college may put a financial burden on my family in the short term, I know the long term benefits will provide the financial security my family deserves,” said Rich Erikson, a second semester student, with a 4.0 GPA in electrical engineering.  Erikson will be looking for employment in the healthcare or biotechnology fields.

Jim Muir, Assistant Vice President, Hughes Network Systems, spearheaded securing donations to meet the Chamber’s goal of $25,000.

“I am so proud of our Chamber and our members. Through the great leadership of Jim Muir, we were able to double our scholarship this year – that directly impacts the future for five students. One of the greatest investments the business community can make is in the workforce of tomorrow.  I’m glad so many of our members recognize how important this scholarship is,” said Marilyn Balcombe, GGCC Executive Director.

“The many Chamber members who made gifts to support this scholarship understand that Montgomery College truly is “The Community’s College” serving as a pathway to four-year universities, employment, and lifelong learning, for more than 60,000 students annually,” said Kathy Stevens, Director of Annual Giving for Montgomery College. “And, they understand the need for community support for the 40% of MC students that depend on government and private financial assistance to attend each year.”

The GGCC is active in providing business-to-business networking opportunities throughout the year: a collective voice in local, regional, and state legislative affairs, professional development opportunities, and other services that enhance the business environment.
