Catholic School Principal Has Pink Mohawk

How many school principal's do you know that have a pink Mohawk? We know of at least one.

We went to St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, Md. Thursday, June 9th to see Principal, J.R. West, shave his hair into a Mohawk and dye it pink for a lost bet before the kids summer vacation.

At the beginning of this school year, Mr. West challenged his students to read 4,000 books instead of the 2,300 they had read the previous year. He promised if they did this, he would shave his hair into a Mohawk and paint it pink.

“In January they were only around 1900 books and I thought I was in the clear but in the spring they kicked it up a gear. They read 4,300 books, averaging 30 books per child, which is great. They read a total of 68 million words this year, and I now have a pink Mohawk,” Principal J.R. West said with a smile on his face.

Heat Advisory for Prince George's County

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Prince George’s County until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31.

A heat advisory means that a period of excessive temperatures is expected.  Because this is the first round of seasonal heat and bodies are not acclimated yet, heat exhaustion and heatstroke will be a bigger threat than they would be later in the summer. The Prince George’s County Office of Homeland Security recommends the following tips:

"This guy's got Sole": A Man's 7,000 Mile Walk For Charity

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our country. It’s a great time to honor the men and women who fight daily to keep America free.

It is normally a time when most people leave the city for a nearby beach and some much needed relaxation, to celebrate the start of summer and pool season. However, not all people leave.

We met Iraq War Veteran, Troy Yocum Friday morning at Modell’s in Bethesda. He is honoring his fellow military servicemen by hiking 7,000 miles across America with a goal of raising $5 million dollars to help military families in need.
