Although Hurricane Irene is long gone, her fury is still being felt by millions of east coast residents as they wade through her aftermath in an attempt to return to normalcy.  From severe flooding to lost power and water supply, the stories of all of our friends in all our communities affected are as expansive as those who have felt her aftermath.

The Summer Food Service Program: Hunger Doesn't Take a Summer Break

Each summer Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) serves children throughout the county free nutritious meals as part of a variety of summer programs.

“The Summer Food Service program began in 1976. The reality is that hunger does not take a vacation. This is the perfect way to reach out to children in the community and provide healthy, balanced breakfast and lunch options for anyone under 18,” said MCPS Director of Food and Nutrition Services Marla Caplon.

This summer nearly 9,000 students will receive meals at 111 locations and six walk-in locations including Summit Hall Elementary, Merryville Elementary, Rolling Terrace Elementary, John F. Kennedy High School.

“Slightly more than 32% of children in Montgomery County are eligible for free or reduced price meals during the school year and might otherwise go without those meals during the summer when school is not in session,” explained Board of Education President Christopher Barclay.

A Change In The Guard

Friends, we are in the midst of a global paradigm shift in health care. At the center of these changes are health and nutrition counselors, wellness coaches of various niches and specialties, acupuncturists, organic farmers, independent film makers, and the list now goes on and on. For example, healing modalities like TCM and Ayurveda are healing systems which promote health using natural, nontoxic substances and which recognizes the important role of the mind and emotions. A paradigm is a model used to explain how and why events happen the way they do, and as mankind's comprehension of the universe evolves, new paradigms emerge. The best example of paradigm shifts is in the field of modern physics. The classical Newtonian explanation of the world which for two hundred years was accepted as reality has now been replaced by quantum mechanics, superstrings, and field theory. In the old paradigm, every event had a definite cause and every action had an equal and opposite reaction.

Favorite Fridays: Favorite Treats To Stay Cool

Favorite Fridays: Favorite Treats To Stay Cool
It's excessively hot and unusually humid in the DC Metro Area this week. The temperature is rising with a 120-degree heat index (wow!) This heat wave can be very dangerous, so drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. If you have to step out of the air condition, check out some of my favorite treats that keep me cool. Clayboys Hawaiian Shave Ice: This family operated cart has been on Bethesda Avenue, in front of Barnes and Noble, for about 11 years. With over 20 flavors including Blue Raspberry (the most popular), Cherry, Coconut, Lime, Grape, Banana, Strawberry, Watermelon, Bubble Gum, Lemonade, Vanilla, Tigers Blood (Strawberry and coconut mixed), Root Beer and Green Apple. A shave ice will set you back $2 for a small, $3 for a medium, and $4 for a large. You can choose up to two flavors per cup. Each serving also has one Swedish Fish inside for you to find!

Favorite Fridays: What's Your Favorite FroYo Spot?

Favorite Fridays: What's Your Favorite FroYo Spot?

I have to say on a hot day, nothing sounds better than frozen yogurt topped with fruit, and chocolate unless of course Miami was an option, then I’d be soaking up the sun (with my friend SPF 30).

FroYo is perfect for an after dinner or lunch spot because it’s light, yet filling with as many toppings as you see fit!

TangySweet in Penn Quarter has always been a favorite of mine because I am obsessed with the Green Tea Tart topped with coconut, and mango. You may think that sounds odd, but trust me its delicious and quite refreshing. Additionally, TangySweet sells Red Velvet Cupcakes, which I buy occasionally and like to eat for breakfast the following morning. My all-time favorite is the Summertime cake. Nothing says rise and shine like a light and zesty lemon cake topped with whipped cream cheese and shredded coconut.

Montgomery County Approves Smoking Ban for Multi-Family Residences

Montgomery County Approves Smoking Ban for Multi-Family Residences

The following information comes to us from The Montgomery County Council:

July 12, 2011—The Montgomery County Council today unanimously approved a Board of Health regulation that will prohibit smoking in certain common areas of multiple-family residential dwellings and certain playgrounds relating to those dwellings. An amendment added to the bill today will ban smoking within 25 feet of playground areas on privately owned property that has a primary purpose to serve the residents of more then one dwelling.

The chief sponsor of the smoking ban smoking was Councilmember George Leventhal, who chairs the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee. Council Vice President Roger Berliner was a co-sponsor.

The ban, which will go into effect on Aug. 12th, got momentum from studies that have looked at the impact of secondhand smoke.
