Leggett to Distribute Reusable Bags to Shoppers on Black Friday

The following notice was sent to us by Karen Falcon:

This Black Friday, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett will promote the County’s new Carryout Bag Law that goes into effect January 1 by distributing reusable bags to shoppers who are waiting in line for the midnight opening of stores Nov. 25.  Leggett will talk to shoppers about the bag law and encourage them to turn Black Friday into Green Friday.  He hopes residents will begin their New Year’s resolutions early this year by bringing reusable bags during the holiday shopping season and thinking about buying reusable bags as holiday gifts for friends and family.

Under the Carryout Bag Law, retailers in Montgomery County must charge five cents for each paper or plastic carryout bag they provide to customers at the point of sale, pickup or delivery. Retailers will receive a one-cent rebate on each plastic bag to help cover administrative costs.

From 10-11 p.m., County Executive Ike Leggett will be at the Washingtonian Center's Target and Kohl's at 9811 Washingtonian Blvd, Gaithersburg.

He then will head to Best Buy, 1200 Rockville Pike, Rockville from 11:15- 11:30 p.m.
